NCCA Vladikavkaz is the only institution in the region in the field of contemporary art. The peculiarities of its activities are defined by the variety of local cultures, religions, and mentalitites, and the value of traditions. The branch aims at creating a common cultural space in the North Caucasus.
The long-term Contemporary and Timely program is dedicated to the integration of contemporary art into traditional environment, providing support for projects focusing on the contemporary interpretation of North Caucasian national historical, cultural, and natural heritage.
In 2007, the Alanica festival — an active polylogue on contemporary art — was established in Vladikavkaz. All festival participants — artists, curators, critics and audience — exist in experimental mode, and all things seen at Alanica become discoveries and trigger points for their worldview transformation. The Festival includes an art residencies program (artists are given 15 days to create their works) and an exhibition for these artworks. Over the years, the Alanica Festival has been visited by artists from more than 20 countries, as well as participants from North Caucasian republics, which allows to establish international contacts and share experiences with colleagues.
The Alanica Festival is a three-time nominee for the Innovation State Contemporary Art Prize and was awarded the Sergey Kuryokhin prize as Best contemporary art festival.
